Online Training: Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT)
CAE's Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) course will help teach you how to use Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS), as well as understand the errors that lead to CFIT accidents in the first place.
On August 11th, 2011, First Air Flight 6560 from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to Resolute Bay, Nunavut was one nautical mile east of the runway and hit a hill.
On August 14th, 2013, UPS cargo plane 1354 was on final approach towards Birmingham, Alabama from Louisville, Kentucky when it struck trees and crashed.
Both accidents are examples of Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT). In both situations, the flight crew had control of the aircraft at the time of the collision and neither had indications of any loss of control.
Fortunately, data collected from IATA shows that the numbers of yearly CFIT accidents and aviation deaths worldwide have been dropping. Much of this improvement can be accredited to the introduction of Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS).
The CFIT course will help teach you not only how to use these key systems, but also understand the errors that lead to CFIT accidents in the first place.
