Online Training: Crew resource management

CAE's Crew Resource Management course encompasses a vast array of CRM concepts such as decision processes, human factors, threat and error management, black swan events, reliability and resilience, startle and surprise, and several case studies.

January 15, 2009. US Airways Flight 1549 from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after takeoff resulting in complete engine failure and an emergency landing on the Hudson River.

August 27, 2006. Comair Flight 5191 from Lexington, Kentucky to Atlanta, Georgia accidently used the much shorter Runway 26 instead of Runway 22 at Blue Grass Airport causing the aircraft to overrun at the end of the runway and crash.

July 19, 1989. United Airlines Flight 232 from Stapleton International Airport in Denver to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, continuing to Philadelphia International Airport crash-landed due to an unnoticed manufacturing defect in the engine's fan disk causing a disastrous failure of its tail-mounted engine.

All these accidents are examples of how Crew Resource Management (CRM) could – or did – save hundreds of souls on board. Not all accidents are attributed to technical malfunctions or lack of knowledge, but instead the inability to respond correctly in a Black Sawn or mistaken event.

The CRM course turns to non-technical skills such as leadership, decision-making, surprise management, error management, and situational awareness to better respond to dangerous situations in which you may find yourself.
