Online Training: Performance based navigation (PBN)

CAE's PBN course will help you better grasp the performance-based method and all its concepts so you too can contribute to the overall safety of national airspace systems.

RNAV, RPN, LNAV, VNAV, LP, LPV. Oh my.

All these acronyms are related to Performance Based Navigation (PBN). Previously, aircraft used sensors equipment such as beacons and/ or waypoints as a means of navigation. But on August 25, 2020, PBN privileges on every IR (Instrument Rating) came into effect. This redefined navigation and created a more flexible, safe, and efficient way to navigate based on performance instead of sensors.

Other benefits of PBN are:

  • Reduced aviation congestion
  • Fuel-efficiency
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Reduced aircraft noise
  • Reliable, all-weather operations

The PBN course will help you better grasp the performance-based method and all its concepts (and abbreviations) so you too can contribute to the overall safety of national airspace systems.

Course Summary

The CAE Pelesys PBN Operations course has been developed in response to significant changes in Performance Based Navigation which resulted from the publication of ICAO PBN Manual Revision 004 (Doc 9613). The material covers PBN concepts and details the framework for the application of the RNAV and RNP Navigation Specifications to Airspace Concepts, operational requirements including Onboard Performance Monitoring and Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitor with and without onboard Fault Detection and Exclusion, and contingency operations in Performance Airspace.

The course also details the application of PBN to Terminal, Approach and Missed Approach Operations, including RNP Approach and RNP Approval Required applications.
